Fire alarm systems - The Netherlands.

Does anyone know if it's a legal requirement in the Netherlands, for a fire alarm sysyems to provide an audible warning if it is a staged alarm ? I have a friend who has a staged alarm in their premises in Holland. The first stage , activated by by automatic fire detection, gives a silent alarm to a call centre responsible for mobilising the fire service. However, there is no audible alarm on a second stagew, unless a call point is activated. Therefore there does not appear to be a time-out mechanism involved.

the only thing I have heard about the netherland's legals is that the use of ionisation smoke detector is totally banned or will be soon due to the radioactive source americum 241 ... also it is better to contact some experts based in there... if you want some accurate answers...

Cant say I know anything about the situation in Holland - hey whatever happened to the idea of harmonisation?

But not all premises in the UK need automatic detection for life safety, occupied workplaces of a basic design can have a manual alarm system for life safety but it may be desirable to have automatic detection for property safety, and this would normally be used out of hours. In this case there would not need to be any operation of the sounders when the detectors operated out of hours, but alarm sounders must always operate within 4 seconds of a call point being operated. Does this sound a bit like the system you describe?

In domestic situation some Regs similar to ours, but hard wired smoke alarm requirement offset if fire doors fitted.

I've heard about this approach before - they dont evacuate a building until the fire service get there and confirm its a fire. Makes us look pretty good.

I have not been involved in the situation in Holland for around 4 years now but maybe I can shed some light of how it was then. They did not have their own fire alarm standards and would accept 5839/ EN54 or VDS.
They have a strange requirement of a external ''Fire service Box'' which you flush in the wall and has a standard key to open it.
From this box the FRS can silence and reset the FA and also isolate the outgoing signal. Most buildings have a connection to the FRS and AFD's call them out but do not evac. I think I remember a timer circuit and a double knock arrangement to give full evac if not reset by pre determined time or second stage.
The red wine has taken the edge away from my memory these days but I hope that helps. Lucky you are not in Germany or France because they do really strange things there!!!
