Amending the 'Sleeping Risk' guide
« on: April 23, 2008, 09:33:30 PM »
Since the introduction of the RR(FS)O and the publication of the guides, there have been numerous posts here highlighting the inadequacies of the current guides and in particular the 'Sleeping Risk' guide.

I think many of us would accept that by gathering together flats, HMOs, sheltered accomodation and holiday homes all into a one-size-fits-all guide, it has become unworkable, especially for the average 'Responsible Person' who the Regs were aimed at.

It's bizzare that the Govt are happy to produce the comical stables and animal guide, but so far have not reissued detailed guidance for common parts of flats. for instance, the section (and table) relating to the choice of AFD is extremely vague.

So what have any of us done about it? Have we contacted the Dept for Communities or our local MP or trade organisation (eg.IFE)?

Probably not.

So should we (the users of the forum) complain en masse/simultaneously and if so, to who and in what format?

Or am I just wasting my time even trying to achieve change????

Messy,

Your wish is our command!

LACORS/CFOA/CIEH/NLA are jointly producing a guide on acceptable standards (guidelines, benchmarks, non-prescriptive advice...you know the jargon) for HMO's, flats and other residential property. This is supported by the government and will be published in early June. (This is quite good and only means it is a few months late...not bad eh?)

If your name is an indication of your location, fear not, LFCDA has been fully represented on the drafting group.

Hmmm, does not exist, they have been the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority (Lfepa) for some time now.

Val

Thanks for the info

I am pleased that, albeit somewhat belated, someone is adressing this issue. Let's hope it is a real improvement and clearly amends the problems in the current DCLG guide

Do you know whether this guidance will look the same as the other guides and/or be available alongside the oter guides on the communities website?

And yes, I am currently employed by the LFEPA and now that I know that we are involved in the consultation, I realise why there's been such a long delay in it's publication!!!!  One thing I learned early on in my long association with the LFB is to never expect a rapid answer/decision from senior LFEPA managers!

It will solve some of them but not all. There will still be a few nut jobs asking for emergency lighting in one bed holiday cottages. etc. etc.

Jokar

Thank you for the correction...us commies are always behind the times, (or is that ahead of the times)

Either way, your pedantry is worrying, are you taking your medication?
