Hi all

I have my interview in 12 days so (fingers crossed) not too long until the medical. I have constantly been exercising and passed the physical, so the next fitness thing is the chester step test. I was hoping that one of you guys might have access to the relevant info to work out my results.

I did it at my local station a few weeks ago and scored 47, which I believe is a pass. But because of nerves on the day I took a copy home and thought I would get in some practice in. I know it is a lot easier away from a test situation but it is still a guide for me.

My pulse was level 1 - 99  L2 - 105 L3 - 117 L4 -126 L5 - 139.  I am an old codger at 45.  I scored better there than I did down the station, But I would still like to know.

I think I am right in saying you only need to have reading of 40, but someone may correct me. However 47 is an excellent so repeat it and you will have no problems.
Any views I express are my own and not my employers. Still confused!

Hi thanks for that I think the pass rate is 42, but you know how nerves can be on the day so I'll keep training.

how does it work? i know you complete the test then rest for a min. do they calculate ur heart rate after the min or how do they score it?

Hi, it's a step of 12 inches and you wear a heart monitor while you do the test. It starts at a slow pace of 15 steps/min(up and down every 4 secs)for 2 mins then you take note of your heart rate.It then increases for the next 2 mins to 20 steps/min and you take your heart rate again and it increases after every 2 mins up to a max of 5 sets(10 mins) continuing to take your heart rate at the end of each set,you do not stop. but if you go over 80% of your max heart rate you must stop the test. your max heart rate is 220 minus your age. you can then work out your aerobic capacity, but I can't tell you how to do the calculation

Hello

I have recently had my interview and I am waiting to hear if I have been successful. Fingers crossed....

Anyway, I am trying to keep myself fit for the medical (if successful).

I completed the step test twice last night and need help to work out my VO2 max. Can anyone help? My readings were...

On 24cm step - Start 66, L1- 86, L2- 91, L3 - 105, L4- 115, L5- 137. I am 29 so max rate is 154.

I then done the test again 5 mins later and got the following results.

On 39cm step - Start 69, L1- 116, L2- 129, L3- 145 and then I bombed out after 45 secs of L4.

I am aware that you need to do the test on a step of 30cm but is it worth me continuing on the 39cm step in the hope that come the day I will have over trained (If I can keep nerves down)?

I know this topic is from a while ago, but I have a step test at my medical coming up, and wondered if you still had a copy that you were talking about. If it is possible, could you forward me a copy?
