Have a read of the policy and see if that changes your mind.  Numbers of businesses especially hotesl and hopitals now have large times 7 - 10 minutes as verification time before an FRS is called to overcome the Uwfs difficulty.  Now that could be quite a problem.  ARC's are being involved and will do holding of calls as wells.

You are right tw.
The FB actually want me to take out the intumescent strips we do have (in corridors) and replace them with smoke seals
David I think you will find they want you to take out the old intumescent strips and install a combined intumescent fire and cold smoke seal. Otherwise it would not make any sense at all. Sometimes these things are not expressed very clearly. I have even seen them referred to as hot and cold fire seals. I have yet to see a cold fire!
Is a hot seal not intumescence and a cold seal the foam/fabric strips that we usually refer to as seals?
We're not Brazil we're Northern Ireland.

Kurnal. Yes You are right. They want the  combined intumescent fire and cold smoke seals.

Ref The false alarms.

I think its a Hotel thing. Everone i know in the busimess (Hotels) has problems with False Alarms

Caused by factors such as faulty equipment (very rare) smoking and deliberate customer abuse.

We use to deals with alarms at the hotel by segregating the building and having staff check all areas and, of course, it was ALWAYS a false alarms.

However since the new legislation has come in I have said ...alarm, call the fire brigade, evecaute the building, leave the alarm on...no exceptions....No problems so far but Xmas party season is coming !!!!!!!!!.....and of course I have HD's

David, you are allowed to have a seek and search procedure and deal with False Alarms by management.  This is actively supported by most FRS.  They will probably want to discuss the time that you require to do this and you may need to speak to the FA engineers that service your premises.  The new CFOA (Chief Fire Officers Association) policy should be vavailable on their website either now or soon which discusses this approach and the way to deal with False Alarms as a manager.  If you fail to deal with the Flase Alarm issue managerially they will deal with it operationally as Unwanted Fire Signals and their is a separate process in the policy for that.  Most Alarm Receiving Centres are on board with this and will assist with this policy.

An extract from the Mann McGowan website, "High performance intumescent strips with optional cold smoke seal capability for fire sealing of fire doors." the terminology is used to describe the two types of seal but if its correct that is another matter, maybe cool would be a better description.

Fit the both seals and instead of changing the HD for SD add a stand alone smoke detector that only operates in the room, also if possible alert the staff via the panel?
All my responses only apply to England and Wales and they are an overview of the subject, hopefully it will point you in the right direction and always treat with caution.
