What would you prefer the new name of conventional fire alarm system be? and why?

Just feel free to express your opinion, as it will remain just an opinion.

I still call them conventional because even though the technology within the panels has changed and there are a lot more options than before,the basic operating principals are the same.

on what basis some call them non-addressable systems then?

Us old boys still call them conventional , but thats an age thing , the correct terminology should be for what you are calling non- addressable is actual non-analogue addressable.
The majority of non analogue severely outweighs the amount of addressable systems that are still on the market.
To my knowledge I can count them on one hand.
To my understanding the term conventional comes from the 'conventional arrangement' of the wiring ie monitored radial circuits with an eol , to which even on an analogue , analogue addressable system would have on board conventional sounder circuits.
I am off to the pub now , as I need some falling over liquid.
Its time to make a counter attack !

None-analogue addressable would be both conventional and old standalone mains and/or batteries powered smoke alarms too!

Conventional used to mean in the old days the Usual, Standard, Normal, Regular, Typical, Traditional…etc just to state some

Also conventional fire alarm system used to mean a system that’s been designed for the first time to follow certain conventions;

Conventions = Rules = Principles = Norms = Standards = Customs = Laws = Practices…etc

Analogue addressable system is now meant to be following a better conventions, but it hasn’t been called the ‘more conventional’ because this wouldn’t make sense and/or beat the proper descriptive name ‘analogue addressable system’, and that’s what made back the name of ‘conventional’ becomes then less conventional than analogue addressable and even less addressable too, as it’s addressed only by zones while analogue addressable is more specific, its addressed by devices within the zones/loops…etc

As a result; ‘conventional’ becomes obsolete name, and so it’s better classifying it with a better name, but in relation to what?

In relation to ‘analogue addressable system it could be the non-analogue, or non-digital as for analogue addressable system is analogue and digital system…, etc

In relation to older smoke alarms (standalone mains and/or batteries powered) it remains happy with its old fashion name of conventional, hence no need for unnecessary extra name…, etc

Finally should we need really to change its name? Is that really necessary?

The debate remains open for other refinements!

Indeed Buzz

People who says some times; I don't know..., they are the people who knows... well I mean, who knows how to gather more knowledge… :)

Surely the 'big' difference is that there are fire alarm systems that can identify the actual device that initiates a fire condition and others that can only identify the zone in which the device is located.

BS has some recommendations applicable to one group and not the other.

Therefore BS has decided to use the terms addressable and non-addressable to differentiate between these two groups. These terms are fairly self-explanatory whereas other terms could be confusing (who is to say a conventional system panel is not 'intelligent' if it uses a microprocessor, for example)

That there are various types of panel/system in both groups has no bearing on the BS recommendations. All types in each group need to meet the specific applicable recommendations.

I'll just carry on calling them conventional.

That way I have more time to spend worrying about my knee. It's bloody killing me.

Not that any of you lot seem to care....
