BS5839-1 any more updates due soon
« on: November 16, 2008, 04:53:30 PM »
Does anyone know if there are going to be any more updates to BS5839-1 before May 2009.
I need to get a upto date copy for my ECA inspection due May time, but I do not want to buy two copies before then.

My copy of BS5839-1:2002+A2:2008 (as the title suggests) was updated on 31st March 2008 and supersedes BS 5839-1 2002+A1:2004 which is withdrawn.

It's a complicated business - this BSI numbering system (overcomplicated some would argue) which I accept I don't fully understand. Perhaps someone else would explain the system.

However, the latest (31st March 2008) version does make a number of minor changes. So surely there won't be any more amendments before next May??????

Unless the impending recession makes the BSI issue money making amendments to keep them in profit?!

I was told that they are not allowed to issue a complete new standard within X number of years of issuing the original due to the unfair cost it would put upon the people needing it.

Funny then they can issue loads of amendments and still charge the same money they would for a complete new guide.....

Had a email back from the British Standards

Dear Mr Brookes,

Thank you for your email.

The document was last updated this year.

I can find no plans to update this standard again at present.

If I can be of further assistance please feel free to contact me.

There will be no amendments before May, as no work is in progress to make amendments. However, work is in hand to produce a new PD 6531, which designers etc ought to have. I have cut down on biscuits, but I see no commensurate reduction in the cost of standards. Ergo the cost cannot be my fault. Anyhow, BS 9999 will make enough money to buy enough biscuits to see me out the rest of my days. Good money for a fundamentally flawed standard.

Just biscuits?

I can even get you 'turkish baklava...' every single day, and for one year, if you can get me all parts related to BS5839... , good deal though
