Type of detectors above tiles?
« on: December 10, 2008, 02:28:19 PM »
It's a sort of snooker room, with heat detectors even above ceiling tiles, it used to be sort of smoking area as well, but not any more, would it be safer to swap the heat detectors by smoke detectors or multi sensors particularly the one above tiles?

Why does it need any detection at all Benz?
We're not Brazil we're Northern Ireland.

If the requirement is that detection is required above the ceiling tiles I would propose smoke sensors, unless theres a reason you can see that smoke sensors wouldn't be suitable.

I take it is analogue , otherwise remote indicators will be on the cards
Its time to make a counter attack !

Well; firstable we didn't install or design the system, we took over the site for maintenance, but found many anomalies..., the system is old version of Gent Vigilon..., some remote indicators (old Gent version) marked up as ionization detectors..., by means they remotely monitor ionization detectors, as it's dark above tiles, we tested them with smoke tester but they never came ON, the time we decided to replace them using a torch..., we discovered they are HDs..., further more above tiles is about 1.5m high, and no sources of ignition, it's an empty space... probably apart from air-conditioning ducts...

Do you know what category of system it is?  L1, L2 etc?

Also, the void above the snooker room, is this same void above other rooms? i.e. an escape route etc?

It's L1 system, and the space above the tiles in the snooker room is not open to other rooms...

Under the L1 system a void greater than 800mm would need to be protected, unless a risk assessment was carried out to determine that there was no risk and therefore no detection required.  The easiest option would have been to install the detection.

By the sounds of it at some point they were ion detectors and a lot of smoking probably went on in there being a snooker room and they caused unwanted alarms, probably why they were changed to heat sensors

Is the system the old 3400 or Vigilon running 34000 devices?

Just a thought the ceiling is not a being used as a plenum , so the air if smokey atmosphere would be returning back into the void , and thats why you have heat detectors , because of the ban on ciggies your smokes should be o.k  :o

The remote indicators YES very old, but the panel is old version of Gent Vigilon, labeled 'To BS5839 part 4…’

While the latest ‘Gent Vigilon’ system we have recently fitted in a different site was labeled 'To EN54 part 2 & 4'...

Regarding detectors they are the later ones 'small shape'...

The panels were manufacturered to BS and then changed to EN standards a few years ago.

It's easy enough to put a new 34710 Optical/Heat sensor in place of the current heat sensor.  You will need to then tell the panel a new type of device is to be allocated at that address.

Do you know what version software the panel is currently running?

The panel would be running 34000 devices, and to put the new S-Quad devices on the loop you will need the following minimum software levels for a BS panel (EN panels are later versions):

Squad requires LCC V3.94, LPC V3.93

Also, the remote LED's you talk about are they wired directly to the device or are they slave LED's wired on the loop?

Will check the software version..., the remote LEDs are off the detector base...
