Acetylene Cylinder disposal

Is anybody aware of an organisation or company that can arrange for the safe removal and disposal of old Acetylene cylinders off site?

Recently undertaken a fire risk assessment on a property and yard, located outside were a number of Acetylene cylinders and other cylinders, namley Oxygen and popane/butane, some were located amongst palletts and large oil drums full of some sort of oil. The organisation has asked the likes of BOC about disposal but they are unable to answer many of the questions being asked of them, such as how old, are they full/empty, where did they come from etc. The organisation appears to be run by volunters and until recently health & safety has not been high on the to do list shall we say.

Any advice on who may help with disposal would help and I could pass it on, if you want to PM me with details and reply without company details here please feel free to do so. any web site would be welcome.

Try a company with provides waste disposal services. Even council sites here won't take condemned extinguishers any more. Have to use disposal company instead at a price.

In addition to Nearlytheres response there does appear to be inconsistency between local authorities and what type of waste they will accept. My local authority will accept butane and propane cylinders and other nasties for instance so it is worth checking with local authority in the area your client is based - you never know!

Or if there are any company or supplier names still visible on any of the bottles contact them to see if they will take them back (I realise acetylene cyclinders do not tradionally have this information on them, but some do).

Failing those options as NT quite rightly says try a waste disposal contractor. The NCEC (National Chemical Emergency Centre) also provides some advice on where and how to dispose  Hazchem / Hazmats alas some of its advice is free, some of it isn't, again worth a try.

NCEC contacted me earlier today and gave some further information about cylinder disposal.

If you cant establish the owner of any acetylene bottles in your possession then there is a company called Synergy whom will come and collect them free of charge

Synergy then tries to establish who the bottle belongs to with a view to selling it back to that company.

No Cleveland I'm a very tolerent person really just like pointing out the ironic.
And we all make mistakes.
