Somebody should write a book. There are loads of variations on this idea it would be good to put them all in one place so peaople could see what the options are.

I know this is an old thread, but if a digital solution is still of interest might I suggest a quick look at the Musterd Emergency Roll Call and Evactuation System here: https://www.thinking-software.com/musterd

Musterd has a Sweep and Clear option, as well as a Roll Call option where Access Control is in place.
