New, additional, guidance for operators of residential care homes has been published to clarify and complement existing guidance for the sector published by the Department for Communities and Local Government.

http://www.nashics.org/uploads/documents/23641652.pdfThe additional guidance, published by the National Association for Safety and Health in Care Services (NASHiCS) and the Chief Fire Officers’ Association (CFOA), is designed to deal with issues including:
1. evacuation of a protected zone in 2.5 minutes;
2. rooms of residents unable to evacuate – upgrading to 60 minutes' fire resistance;
3. staff remaining with residents who are unable to evacuate;
4. the use of external fire escapes by residents;
5. the travel distance of evacuation routes; and
6. the use of by-pass routes.
