This from the FIA article:-

"He cited the Ginsters production facility in Cornwall where pies and pasties getting jammed in the production line and overheating caused around 40 false alarms a year. By simply undertaking staff training in the safe verification of such alarms, they had reduced them to one or two a year."

Easy done if you have identified a specific issue which is causing a specific problem requiring a specific control measure made all the more easier if in an open space. Fine by me but sending wardens on a fire search mission is a lot different.

That brings back some memories of early AM jaunts especially down to the SU bar in Surrey St. in freshers week and at the end of term! The FIA seem to be frequently banging the drum about fire services non-attendance and the dangers it presents in fire losses but they never take into account the risk of fire engines proceeding to false alarms and the dangers to members of the public and fire-fighters in road accidents?

We have a strict policy of non attendance to UwFs, but you only get on the naughty boy list if you have caused us problems, and only then following lots of advice on managing your system. 99% of occupiers work with us.

Couple of exceptions to our non attendance - Residential care and domestic including sheltered housing.

We had one site that used to generate over 300 calls per year.

In the distant past as a serving fireman I had the pleasure of attending AFA's at our two local hospitals on most day shifts to either one or the other. After a period of recording and investigation, it was found to be caused by the industrial type toasters (non pop-up) in use on the ward kitchens etc. It was agreed with the hospital management to replace with pop-up toasters.
Success, it almost removed all the false alarm calls overnight.
Sadly the old ones gradually came in to use again, along with complacency.
As stated, a bit of training for staff goes a long way to prevent complacency and encourage better practice

Had one site where they decided to bring a kettle into the office,directly under a smoke detector. no prizes for guessing what happened when they made their first cup of tea.

LFB never spotted it though and blamed the equipment for being faulty.
