Emergency Lighting in Common Areas of Flats
« on: June 19, 2012, 11:36:53 AM »
I am trying to find out when the requirement under building regs for EL in blocks over 2 floors came in (table 9)?  It's in the 2000 version but I don't have a 1991 copy, can anyone point me in the right direction please.

Thanks

CP3 chapter 4 part 1 1962 recommended that the lighting to stairways and corridors be supplied from protected independent circuits and this was beefed up a little more in the 1971 edition though still falling short of emergency lighting as such.

The mandatory rules for means of escape that accompanied the 1985 Building Regs still referenced CP3 (protected circuits) so the answer must be that the 1992 edition of the  Building Regs introduced the recommendation for emergency (escape ) lighting?

The BS5588 part 1.1 1984 might be worth a look though CP3 was was not officially withdrawn till BS5588 part 1 1990. This document recommended that if an escape lighting system was not installed then it is essential that the lighting circuits be protected against fire. I do not seem to have a copy of the 1992 ADB.

Table 9 of 1991 ADB says that escape lighting is required in all common escape routes in residential accommodation

The section on the main changes from the 1985 edition does not identify it as a change.

Thanks Gents, I have managed to get the same info from CP3 so know at least the emergency lighting wasn't a requirement from around 1971 and perhaps came in under the 1991 ADB.  I haven't found anything inbetween those dates.

Thanks again for the replies.
