Extinguishers.
« on: May 12, 2014, 03:52:08 PM »
Why would a registered fire risk assessor recommend the removal of water fire extinguishers from a children's pre school play group to be replaced by dry powder? Yes, I have explained it correctly. Dry powder to replace water.

Hi NT - I would really like to know his reasoning and whether he carried out a risk assessment beforehand as per 5306!! And when you say registered are you talking about IFE registration, FRACS, SP205 or another body?

I've seen quite a few brand new DP extinguishers in inappropriate places recently and one theory is that the less scrupulous are trying to get rid before the amended guidance from 5306 becomes common knowledge.

There are less mysteries in the cosmos. I agree with your theory.

Because they are extremely misguided??? (That's phrasing it politely)

I'd call their bluff on this and ask their rationale - did they have a boot full of DP when they did the FRA?

I despair at the stuff I see these days....

I've seen this before and it's probably because they think a dry powder will cover all types of fire likely to occur, so therefore a good option. Yes, an easy and inappropriate option and makes you wonder if the've ever experienced the impact of dry powder extinguishers being used in confined areas. I've seen a care home that was supplied DP extinguishers throughtout the entire escape routes. Sigh

What worries me is that the person is registered. Bet they recommended those very expensive signs above them as well and oh nearly forgot ?10 to fit them too.

Becausese they are lazy! and DP is the easy option because they can be used on most classes of fire. You have to think a bit to recommend the specifics and some assessors out there don't like doing that.

Just had a school customer phone up asking for a 2kg ABC powder extinguisher for the flammable metals that they have in the prep room.

Apparently someone had just been on a course..................

How a dry powder can be any better than water? I really don't get it. Replacing fire extinguisher with that of dry powder is not a good idea.  :(

Water is very dangerous. Put your head in a bucket of it and you will be dead in no time. I know that the product is merely an acronym for Wonderful and Terrific Extinguishing Reagent, but you can see why some people wont even have a bath.
