In line with the IRMPs of most FRS should this thread not be renamed Community Safety - it will save so many more lives.

dear guest, it may have escaped your notice but most fire authorities have been carrying out community safety long before the irmp saga started, irmp did not introduce the concept of community safety. in fact some authorities have already rebranded their com fire safety depts/sections as community safety. at a recent ec meeting of the fbu  the following was discussed

   Change of Terminology from Community Fire Safety to Community Safety

The Executive Council are invited to note the change in terminology from Community Fire Safety to Community Safety. This change of terminology is being made by several Brigades in recognition of the fact that the Fire Service has a much wider role in Community Safety.


The Executive Council were asked to consider whether this change of terminology properly represents the current and future work and roles of the FBU membership.


this statement was subsequently endorsed in the december 2003 ec meeting.

the intent of your original question however is agreed and the title of this group perhaps should be changed, over to you admin peeps. im not sure whether the renaming will in fact save more lives, but i dont think you actually meant that!!

Does this mean Brigades are going to be involved with educating general home safety - electrical, pan handles sticking over cookers where children can get them, locking medicine cabinets, poison storage, baby gates, etc etc. Or crime, street lighting, speed bumps etc?

Community Safety includes a wide range of areas and it would be confusing (& a lie) if the name was changed, but brigades still only worked around home fire plans, fitting detectors, fire prevention, hoax calls, etc.

Basically - what extra things are you doing to warrant the name change?

With the huge workload faced by the UK fire service caused by the simultaneous introduction of IRMP, IPDS and New Dimensions, I cannot believe that the Govt, Employers or FBU have the time, personnel or inclination to sit around pondering the less than important issue of whether to drop the word 'Fire' from our letterheads!

Call me old fashioned, but surely getting the changes implemented safely (using common sense as a yardstick rather than the fiscal purse) must be the priority.

anthony b - fire service personnel have 'knowledge' of fire and therefore the bulk of the work will obviously be fire related, however other activites do have a knock on effect, activities such as crucial crew are a prime example as is involvement in cdrps/lsp's etc. identifying a trailing extension lead as a hazard isnt exactly rocket science or the remit of 'electrical' specialists - no doubt i and many others could go on to identify other issues not specifically fire orientated that we are involved in. i actually believe it is a change in mindset we need to undertake as opposed to a 'name' change, and though it needs to be considered it isnt really a priority, what happens IS!!

m shaw, actually the fbu have a duty to their members to consider any changes in the work their members are being asked to undertake, though i do agree with your 'old fashioned' ideas!!! as for the other 'current ' work - was that a offer of help !! LOL
