Dorgard question
« on: April 22, 2015, 04:09:08 PM »
I have just come across some premises with several Dorgard devices fitted on fire resisting doors.Nothing unusual there you may think ,but these premises had no Automatic fire detection at all, therefore in my eyes the devices did not operate automatically. !!! Am I correct and if so does anyone know of any guidance which states that these devices need to be in premises with AFD to operate correctly. ?

the interaction of such devices with fire alarms, together with recommendations for the provision of detection equipment and classifications of resilience set against typical use can be found in BS7273-4. But in short you are right to be concerned. Without detection a dorgard is equivalent to a wedge - both negate the fire performance of the door in the absence of human intervention.

I've come across that before as well. One small building owner proud as punch that he had fitted Dorguards to his doors until I pointed out that he had no auto detection. Amazing how is mood changed so quickly.
Each and every day is a learning curve and today is one of those days?

Well it comes down to staff training really...Just get them all to run around shouting 'FIRE' to sound pressure levels of 65Dbs for at least 14 seconds and hey presto, the doors will release. Simples

12/10 pitch dog whistles do the trick. Added bonus - great numbers of dogs come running and obviously like to mark their scents by peeing everywhere. So, great as a suppression system too?!!!

Mr P you are not taking this seriously enough. What if there are electrical appliances in proximity?

Actually I thought there may be a niche in the meerkat and rounded up all the strays. So at least let me recoup my expenses before you pull the plug on this idea.!!! (Please insert smiley of your choice here)
