All my responses only apply to England and Wales and they are an overview of the subject, hopefully it will point you in the right direction and always treat with caution.

It appears to be a very old news story Tom, the consultation link does not work. There appears to be a problem with proof reading- see the story on the Derbyshire sprinkler initiative, the last sentence of which is a caption for a photograph that does not exist.

The article in the news letter states "Published in 2007, BB 100 advised on how to design school buildings so that they satisfy Building Regulations Part B, (Fire Safety).

Published in 2007 is the old one the 2014 version is the new one, so as Kurnal has said old news.

I do happen to know that they are most definitely working on a revision as we speak, though a quick trawl through the internet reveals only this: http://thespaces.org.uk/bb100-fire-safety-design-schools/ .  The embedded link to the consultation document doesn't work, though.

From a quick scan its mostly a refresh of the old BB100.

four obvious changes;

they've downgraded the expectation on fire suppression for property protection. from "we expect it" to "its not a bad idea",

removed the requirement for a fire door at the end of a dead end corridor,

adopted ADB compartment sizes (much bigger than the old BB100),

and referenced BS 9999 as an acceptable alternative.

I'm talking about the consultation draft. the 2014 version and the 2007 version are the same document with different covers.

As you say, it's been exceedingly well hidden - I only got to know about it the day the 'consultation' closed - 15 August.

Serious bad news for the fire door industry in that it's trying to say everyone must use BS EN 1634 tested doorsets.   At least Building Regs acknowledge the wealth of data and experience that BS476:  Part 22 has given everyone - and who knows - will Brexit see the back of 1634? (or at least the requirement to CE mark?)

"Sprinklers may not be a bad idea"

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-sussex-37148332

The fire commander described it as a challenging fire- early to say of course but looks like it's the same old story of rapid fire spread in voids and a lack of compartmentation?
