Modelling

I am trying to conduct some modelling of conditions within compartments of origin and spread from another compartment. I am currently using (or attempting to !!) Fastlite that I have tried downloading from the NIST website. I can't get the software to work properly on my laptop.

Can anyone suggest any other modelling programmes that are free that I can experiment with in analysis of tenability limits in compartment fires?

Not aware of any free ones??  I know that I looked at it a couple of years ago and it did tend to be expensive.

Hi GB
FastLite I believe is used with CFast or FPETool so you would need them as well. A full list of Fire modelling software (mostly free) is available at http://www.bfrl.nist.gov/866/fmabbs.html

If I remember correctly CFast and FPETool are dos based tools I would start by installing one of these first I did use CFast some time ago and it worked OK for me

I must admit though you need a degree to use some of them although installation should be OK

Hope this helps

Colin

The only free stuff worth playing with comes from NIST.

They tend to work mostly with zone models which are of limited value.

CFD is better but you have to know what you are doing. Its better to get a specialist modeller to do the work for you.

Has anyone worked with FDS & Smokeview, CFD models from the Nist site?. If so how have you found it in comparison to other models.

for small compartments, CFAST would be your best bet. CFAST has a newer version (release 6) which comes with Graphic User Interface (GUI) for use in winXP environment similar to BRANZFIRE from BRANZ new zealand. BRANZFIRE is available for a limited trial period only.

older version of CFAST works in DOS environment and was unstable in winxp which can be corrected if you download a copy of freesource DOSBox.

For FDS, you will need a lot more input and detailing and time.

For all modeling, it's the same principle of Rubbish In- Rubbish Out.  I wouldn't be too serious involving myself with FDS for small compartment, they'll get into your nerve. And your hair starts to gray out like mine.
