I have made this a separate topic from the topic on third party certification, as the following information is much more specfic than third party certification generally.  The latter information sits within an FAQ on the Scottish Government firelaw website, whereas the information on fire risk assessors is part of a different FAQ.

A step forward in the right direction, however they have missed off the biggest register, so I have notified those at http://www.oshcr.org/ that they are missing out and should contact the Scottish government for inclusion on the listing.

Is it true that the registers on the Scottish website are listed in order of perceived quality?

No it isn’t a joke Davo

I have a good mind to tell the person responsible for the Scottish government web advice, about the register of health and safety professionals, he has obviously overlooked it for some unknown reason.

Those listed are chartered health and safety professionals and are also signed up to a code of professional conduct; if you read the IOSH and IIRSM ones, the duty holders have nothing to worry about if they appoint someone off this register.

No Kurnal I think they are listed in order of Scottishness of the persons providing the info to the government advisor

Thought you would like that one Speyside.
Funny though I know a couple of people offering fire risk assessments listed on that register and I would not deem them competent to do so. You will get the basic triangle of fire stuff but no effective evaluation of the existing risk control measures.

It seems to me if you cant beat them join them and that our own Professional Institutions should get on board with that register.

I'm afraid my experience of people who are primarily H&S trying to do fire* is such that I'm glad the Scottish Government missed off the H&S register.

* had an example of one spouting such rubbish today to a client that I promptly blew totally out of the water - fortunately the client themselves is very switched on and smelt a rat and double checked before acting on the original advice

I agree with AnthoneyB.  Although many H&S professionals have an understanding of the basics I've yet to come across one who has a good understanding of fire safety design, principles or management.  There are a lot who think they do, but the best H&S guys that I have come across are the ones who know the limitations of their knowledge and ability and consult FS professionals when the need arises.

The Scottish Government guidance is for Fire Risk  Assessors. If the H&S fraternity would like to be recognised for their abilities in this field, then they should register with a FR organisation.  If I want detailed reliable guidance on CDM issues, or confined space working  I don't go to a general H&S practitioner, and I don't look for that help on a register of fire risk assessors.
