Retained Crew Manager
« on: May 17, 2006, 09:11:29 PM »
Hi folks,
just about to submit the paperwork to apply for Crew Manager at my 'night-time' station ( I run with another station during the day).
Does anyone have any hints and tips, buzzwords etc that I should be taking on board before the interviews?
Many thanks.

PQAs, no offence but, a load of piffle & waffle. Tell them what they want to hear and you will do fine. PQAs/rolemaps are a waste of time. They do nothing to find out about people's real qualities, thats why the fire service is in such a state with so many poor managers.

Quite.

Whether you agree with the PQA style questionbs, or not, is irrelevant pete. They are the main basis of all FRS interviews so A11 should be encouraged to study them. I for one will help him anyway I can - so to you Alpha PM me for any help I can give and please ignore Pete.

Thanks for your views folks. Looks like I've got a lot of papers to read over the weekend. Interviews are in 3 weeks.
I realise that a lot of what is being looked for is an understanding of Brigade policy on Integrity & Diversity, Health & Safety and  Community Fire Safety as well as your own personal attributes. However theres bound to be something that I'll forget to gen-up on!
Thanks again everyone.

Hi,
I have just had my interview for CM with derbyshire it consisted of 6 questions 2 operational, 2 health & safety and 2 equal opps i am not saying yours will be the same but my questions were RTA/ motor way proceedures, incident command (your duties as sector commander), Firefighter injury what would you do, what have you done to help others, someone persistantly using foul and abusive langage (what would you do) and a question on a more serious offence of bullying and harrassment again they wanted to know what action you would take.
A good tip is to ask around your brigade find out who is doing the interview and who the last person was that was interviewed for this post the chances are the questions will be the same.

Cheers Bol,
as you say, the questions may be different, but they probably have a similar theme - dynamic risk assessment, sector command, utilising team strengths etc.
I'll text a couple of lads on Monday that had interviews 3 or 4 months ago.
Thanks again.

Alpha one one, our interviews would be PQA and there is no operational questioning. I really would ask your management what format is to be used (indeed I would be very annoyed if they don't tell you anyway as part of the proces - good management practice is to give some clue as to what the process is!) as well as hearing from others what happened before. When contacting your colleagues go with the mindset that they were 3 to 4 months ago and things may well have chnaged, plus I would not be texting them - I would be speaking to them.
