Fire extinguisher service engineer study material
« on: September 21, 2006, 10:32:42 PM »
Hi anyone got any copies of the relevant materials, FETA etc that they want to sell. This is for a youngster who was a Young Ff and now wants to do the FETA examination. Also any advice as to where to find the syllabus? The FETA site has one, very basic, version...........

If the extinguisher servicing course books were PDF's I'd gladly help you out, however all my training material is paper based, two folders with a combined thickness of 6" of material & even then not complete!

The actual syllabus is quite basic & the course itself only just prepares you for the real world of extinguisher maintenance (thats if you want to be good and proper at it).

I would say that the exam alone is not advisable unless you are refreshing - the full course is essential as although you may have picked up stuff it may not be correct & fire authority service staff (with some very good exceptions) are NOT the best teachers (my local one is notorious for not having a clue about correct servicing).

Do the full course and you get a corect basic grounding and all the course books. I did moine with Chubb & got a lot more than just the FETA manual which is crap & little better if not worse than the old extinguisher servicing regimes in the old fire service drill book. I keep meaning to write a new one that is better and also suitably illlustrated, but theres never enough hours in the day!

You can shop around for the FETA course as several companies and all three trade bodies run them at differing prices.

I'll have a dig for anything 'electronic' I may have that helps

I received the following email recently can anybody help.

"I service the portable extinguishers at my place of work. I took a feta registerd maintenance course in 2001 with chubb. Is there a time limit as to how long this certificate lasts ie does it need to be retaken after so many years or is it a one time course. Any information you have would be greatly appreciated"
All my responses only apply to England and Wales and they are an overview of the subject, hopefully it will point you in the right direction and always treat with caution.

All the trade bodies now put three years on certs as do BAFE, it's not mandatory yet if working outside these bodies but they are wanting to go that way.

As it bumped an old post I'll say I don't have any useful electronic study material, it's all print or in my head, always wanted to produce something that had lots of photos & diagrams (a lot of the stuff I've seen is poor, just bland text, & the odd line drawing) but never had time!
