RRO and a local Zoo

I'm trying to help a local charity organized Zoo with their FRA.

Can't find anything in any of the guides


There are 6 buildings within the complex that are along the lines of, you walk in at one end, look at the reptiles, rabbits etc, and walk out of the door at the end. I would have thought that they would require emergency lighting and exit signs, but what about a Manual Fire Alarm?
Also there are lots of interconnected out buildings housing workshops, barns, machinary etc etc, with many workers coming and going, I would have thought that again, a Manual operated fire alarm system would be appropriate.

First question is why do you need any fire alarm. If people are going to become aware of a fire before it prevents their escape then no alarm may be necessary.

I understood that in any building there has to be a way of raising the alarm, which could be shouting, banging a bell etc, I thought that in this case, where there might be as many as 30 people wandering round at anytime that a break glass point would be a more suitable way of raising the alarm. It would get the attention of staff members who may be 30 or more meters away.

For the buildings the 'Small and medium places of public assembly' Guide would seem to apply. If there are outdoor areas containing exhibits then the as yet unpublished 'Outdoor events and venues' guide. I'm inclined to think a notice 'In case of fire, shout 'Fire', leave the building and alert a staff member' would probably be adequate for these isolated buildings.
