Small servery needs fire shutter or door- any tips?
« on: January 30, 2007, 03:45:42 PM »
I am trying to find a supplier of a fire shutter or suitable door blanks that could be cut down to protect a small  servery in a historic building, the servery is only approx  600mm wide by 750mm high, have spent half the afternoon on google without success, any tips would be very welcome.

The door blank would have slide vertically due to space constraints. The pragmatic Fire Officer is not necessarily requiring FD30S certification, just a significant improvement towards that standard.

The servery opens into the single staircase in a commercial building, no sleeping accommodation.

You could probably use a fire damper!

Try actionaire - they manufacture in the uk.

If not then Bolton and Brady are a big fire shutter firm, most of these things can be made to measure.

We use a company called TFS who are generally very good at "fire stopping solutions" you could try Drew on 0162 1818 118.... they work nationwide, mention Dave at CTA.

'Envirograf' do a "PRODUCT 90: Fire/Smoke Drop Curtain Automatic/Manual Reset" which could fit the bill (www.envirograf.co.uk/products/product090.html - fascinating site - full of stuff that you didn't know you needed; what would one use "fire protection cardboard" for, for example???).

Getting a timber blank that can be cut down and lipped isn't a problem; getting it to operate and be fire resisting by sliding vertically would be!

A warning about vertical shutters. When Building Research built their new 'low energy' office block in 1996/7, (Building 16 for those who have been there) such a sectional metal roller shutter was put in on the ground floor where the offices were divided from the main staircase. The idea was to allow a receptionist to be in the office but able to answer callers 'face-to-face' over a counter; the shutter being closed at night or on activation of the FA system to maintain fire integrity.
Only after Fire Research occupied that part of the building was anyone able to point out that in the event of an FA actuation, any visitor at the reception desk stood a risk, at the very least, being laid out as the shutter came rapidly down! Discussion went on about time delays on the actuating mechanism; in the end the reception counter was never used, the shutter removed and an intercom fitted instead.

Thanks John. I have seen instances exactly as you describe- one community building I know has six of these gravity powered shutters on a 30 second delay which gives staff a little chance to stand clear and warn customers- a hawser linked to a magnet will take their eye out if they forget and stand too close. So nothing to worry about there then!

These shutters also often will have little or no smoke performance so less suitable for use in staircases.
