Safety Alert - Water & Foam Fire Extinguishers

NHS Estates have been made aware of a Trust who have discovered that all discharge hoses on their 6 litre AFFF (Aqueous Film Forming Foam) fire extinguishers have cracked.

Chubb have investigated the problem and concluded that the subject hoses were manufactured between May 2002 and October 2003

Models affected:

Chubb Water - EW9C, EW9
Chubb Hydrospray - EH6
Chubb Foam - EF6, EF6C, EF9, EF9C

Thomas Glover Fire Power Water - 9903/00
Thomas Glover Fire Power Foam - 9205/00 & 9206/00
Thomas Glover Optimax Water - 5914/00 & 5915/00
Thomas Glover Optimax Foam - 5235/00 & 5236/00, 5237/00 & 5238/00

Thomas Glover extinguishers are made by Chubb for sale to the fire trade and are distributed by small & large independant extinguisher firms (& a few web based sales firms)

Users are advised to take the following action :

1)   Organisations with no service contract with Chubb
a)   No immediate action is required.
b)   Pass this Alert to your service company / internal department.
c)   At the next annual service, advise the service engineer to record locations of Chubb or Thomas Glover (water and foam) extinguishers with defective hoses. Also, check spare Chubb or Thomas Glover hoses if any.
d)   Check that the extinguishers / spares were supplied between May 2002 and October 2003.
e)   Contact Chubb or Thomas Glover , who will provide free new replacement hoses for those that they have supplied, for others to fit.

2)   Organisations with service contract with Chubb
a)   No immediate action is required.
b)   Chubb is aware of the problem.
c)   At the next service visit, Chubb engineer will identify defective hoses. Also, check spare hoses if any.
d)   Chubb will replace hoses on extinguishers / spare hoses they have supplied between May 2002 and October 2003 free of charge.

Thanks for this Anthony, put the word out to my Fire Safety Officers who discovered we have the problem. We would have picked it up becuase of the deluge of information from the manufacturer of course .......!
