Height

I know there is no longer a height restriction for firefighter recruits, but I am slightly concerned that I would have problems with the lift test (simulating lifting a ladder onto the back of a pump) or tasks on the job such as getting equipment from the top shelf of a locker on the truck. I'm only 5"2. Any opinions on how much of a problem this would pose?

After looking at the link my first reaction is that this report is dated January 2002.

It is my understanding that height restrictions don’t exist anymore. The brigade I work for have invested heavily in a modern fleet of appliances that have air suspension that allow the working height of the appliance to be reduced considerably, I don’t think we are unique most brigade subscribe to Firebuy so appliances are pretty similar. Also, equipment in sliding trays allow for easier access. Most of these innovations have come about to ensure that manual handling regulations are complied with and to allow for a more diverse workforce.

The new MAN appliances used by Devon and Somerset are fitted with this type of suspension!

I was aware that height restrictions have been removed; are sliding trays only a recent addition to appliances then? Sorry, I did mean to talk about the trays as opposed to 'shelves' in my first point! My local station has these on their appliances and I'm not convinced I could lift the equipment out of the top one! Thanks for the link Dave.
