I am trying to upgrade an existing system.
An easy question if you know the answer,i have spoken to several people about what wire should be used for smoke detectors and emergency lighting.
It varies between FP and 1.0mm twin pvc, which is correct.
Also i assume that the existing part of the alarm can be left alone?

Can anyone help please

an easy question is why are you working on a fire alarm system when you don't know what cable to use?

I'd suggest that you leave it to the experts, these systems are there to protect people's lives.

If you want to learn about fire alarm installation, get some training from these folks:

http://www.bfpsa.org.uk/

I'm not prepared to speculate on what might be needed, however the answers (for the fire alarm system) will be contained within British Standard 5839, which you should be familiar with, if you are working on fire alarm systems.
