Reform fire safety order re - farms

To what extent does the new regs apply to farms and farm buildings inasmuch that there is a wide range of farm type buildings, such as barns,silos, dairys, cattle buildings etc. Would a tenant farmer be the 'responsible person' or a landowner?Anyone clarify where and under what circumstances a fire risk assessment is necessary. I know that farms are a high risk area from arson and contain many combustible substances.

Yes the Order applies to farms and farm buildings and farm yards  but not to fields and woods. The employer will be the responsible persons or if there are no employees the owner. The order only aims to protect relevant persons . Sorry but the livestock is not directly protected by the order despite the recent guidance document implying that they may be.

A written risk assessment will be required where there are more than 5 employees or if a licence of any description is in force.

Can I just change Kurnals post slightly in that a recorded FRA will be required, this is not necessarily a written one and if there are less than 5 employees the legislation still applies but the FRA does not need recording.

Quite right Jokar. Of course Someone else may correctly point out that it is the prescribed information that needs recording not the risk assessment but then I would call them an anorak.

To what extent - fully.

I am sure if you tell us a little bit more info, people can point you in the right direction on how to complete this.  Are you the landlord or the farmer?  How many people work there?

Thank you folks for your replies, your comments confirm the fact that a fire risk assessment is necessary in most farm buildings and areas. Advice was needed for somebody who has a small dairy farm with six people employed with various outbuildings including the main dairy area. In addition i believe there is a british standard, BS.5502-23 which gives advice on fire precautions in agricultural buildings.
