Stopped in a certain hotel on Cromwell Street, London, Saturday night
4 floors, approx 50 beds down little corridors. One centre staircase
Free swing fire doors to stair, ill fitting, didn't close properly, generally not up to standard
No detection whatsoever
Bells in corridors and stairs only.
One water extinguisher in each centre stair landing
EL not bad
Doors in centre GF lobby propped open except kitchen which was wild west saloon style!
TV lounge on first floor half landing, door propped open.
Reception allegedly one perwson at all times, all foreign.
Trouser press in my room had broken cable taped up with denso.
?Basement being refurbed
Didn't look too hard, Mrs Davo was with me.
Question is, should I expect more for my 75 quid or am I a tight Northerner???

£75 is cheap - you are a tight northerner.

Hotel staff are often foreigners (wherever you are in the world) this isnt a new thing its the nature of the industry.

It could be relevant (to fire safety) if their english is weak but my experience is that I can understand them better than most northerners.

Put a 1 in front of the 75 , and then you may have some attention , was Rigsby the manager
Its time to make a counter attack !

As a 'LFB lad' (to which the post is entitled) what do you want me to do about it?

A common theme on many threads is how it's the RP's job to make a sufficient FRA and act upo it - and not the LFB.

I assume you mean Cromwell Road (rather than street) which is an area with many such Hotels in the Kensington area of west London. It is just possible that this hotel has escaped the notice of the local FS team (unlikely but possible). Or that it hasn't been looked at for some time.

In any case, if you feel strongly about the risks this premises poses (and didn't want to spoil your romantic getaway with Mrs Davo by approaching the management - and who can balme you!?) let the local LFB FS Team know about it.

For Cromwell Road West kensington you'll need:

The Kensington and Chelsea Fire Safety team
3rd Floor Kensington Fire Station 13 Old Court Place London W8 4PL
telephone: 020 8555 1200 ext 54811
email: kcgroup@london-fire.gov.uk

Mention the term "alleged fire risk" and an Inspecting Officer will attend within hours

By the way, £75 is relatively cheap and you will rarely find the Queen's English spoken in many London Hotels. I think on most days, there are more lithuanian women working in Park Lane Hotels than live in Lithuania!!!

Not speaking good English may be relevant.  Being foreign isn't.  A lot of us in London are foreign.

Davo

When I talk of chocolate box cottages  and character farmhouses letting out one or two bedrooms on the ground and first floor  with open plan staircases and window exits many good folks on here tell me its high time they knuckled down and either complied or were shut down. But nobody seems to be interested in commenting on  appalling standards in large hotels down in the Smoke.

Strange innit! Next time stick in  Emmerdale or Corra country. We Northern boys cant hope to make sense of East enders. I reckon all the best footy teams are up North anyway.

Listen 'ere guvverner. Us Eastenders take umbrage at u saying you can't make sense of us. U gotta face up to it an unnerstand we speak more like good 'ole Lizzie than the whippet trainers. Probably right about the footy though.

Thanks Davo. Ive been in Chester with my daughter celebrating her 21st birthday, staying in a northern  hotel with luxuries such as fire doors and fire alarms.

Such civilisation as has clearly not reached parts of the deep south yet.

The reason we have such poor service, indifferent food, dodgy buildings, rude staff, substandard hygiene in the UK  is because we tolerate it. Hotel accommodation which is cheap should not be a compensatory factor for suspect FS measures.
We're not Brazil we're Northern Ireland.

Well Chris, I think you are a bit over the top on this one, I know that the PC brigade rule the world these days but surely not on here too.  The comments made about Germans were not in any way malicious.   I lived in Germany for 13 years, speak fluent German, served as a firefighter in Germany for 5 years, I am an honourary firefighter in the German fire service where I served and having been married to a German for 9 years and have a son who is a German citizen feel that I am very much in a position to say something that may not make every German smile. My best man at my wedding was my best friend who just happens to be a German, I am even sharing my caravan with a German during the World Firefighters Games in August this year and had 5 Germans staying at my house during the 2004 Worldfirefighters games in Sheffield..

How come we can all argue our points about this that and the other on this site but as soon as another nation is mentioned, we are banned by the PC police.  I feel that I am very much in a position to comment on a large range of things German including how many of them behave as a part of their culture!!!!!!!

That said, I am now dismounting from my soap box.

Kaiser,

I hadn't planned to air this one in the open, but as you have asked:

In my opinion, it matters not how friendly you are with German people in your personal life.  In my judgement and opinion your joke was offensive.  I try not to hinder free speach, I delete very few posts, I acknowledge that this isn't a very democratic process and that others opinions may differ.  I'd rather not get into a debate about this.

In the words of the great Basil Fawlty, "Don't mention the war" (at least not here anyway!!)
