Equipment Assembly
« on: June 05, 2008, 05:16:33 PM »
Hi

Would anyone be able to help me please.  I've got my fitness test coming up, and am a bit worried about the equipment assembly, any ideas on what it is and how difficult (or straightforward) it is.

Thanks

Its a portable pump, its very straight forward to put together, they give you a demonstration before hand and there are also pictures on the wall to guide you.  There are usually 10 components to put together for it, but like i said its very simple, just listen carefully and you cant go wrong.  Always remain calm throughout your physical just take things nice and easy, obviously dont go to slow but just take your time and you will find it calms you down and you get the tasks done quicker.

ps they allow plenty of time to put the equipment together just be positive and stay calm thats the best advice i can give you

pps always refer to anyone in a uniform as sir/ma'am

good luck! where you applying for?

Hi,

Can I just add something to the previous post. Whilst taking things nice and easy is good advice I would advise against this for the equipment carry as it is a timed exercise. You can walk when you are carrying equipment but when not carrying anything run as fast as you can as this is where you can make up your time.

Thanks to both of you for the help, that's made me feel better.  I was worried to death that it would be really complicated and i wouldnt have a clue!. I've been training so hard, i'd be gutted if i failed on that.

I'm applying for a post in the West Midlands.  I got my written exam results last Friday, so i am just waiting for a date for the physical now.  I have been going to some of the womens fitness sessions at the training centre too.  The firefighter that runs them is brilliant, although you dont always think that at the time, her classes are a killer (she made us all do the bleep test as a warm up last week!).

Thanks again

i agree with you there rp, my point was not to get wound up over it as stressing can take energy from you, but no doubt about it, when you arent carrying the equipment run your backside off to allow yourself enough time, but if you have prepared which it sounds like you have you should be fine.  the time limit for the equipment carry is in the region of 5mins so its plenty of time if your fit enough.

good luck and hopefully you will pass your physical then my advice would be to prepare flat out for your interview, one step at a time though

let us know how you got on

the only thing i found hard about the equipment assembly was that i'd just done the equipment carry and my safety glasses kept steaming up so i couldnt see what i was doing. even then it's straightforward enough.

Im currently in West Midlands Fire Service, im going through the recruits training course at the moment.
Your attitude is perfect with attending the fitness sessions - keep it up as you will need to be super fit for some of the drills.
