sprinkler protection for a canopy protruding by more than 2.3m
« on: September 02, 2008, 04:54:19 PM »
Recently, it was brought to my attention during laying down a proposal for a school building, there is a requirement for a sprinkler protection system to be installed to protect canopies which stick out by more than 2.3m away from an external elevation. Could anyone, cast some light on the above or perhaps direct me to the relevant documents covering the above requirement.

Kind regards,

Owen

Is it possibly that, from Building Control's point of view or because of the recommended level of coverage of sprinkler systems, because it projects by more than 2.3M it may be classed as more than just a canopy?
Just a thought.

From BS5306 part 2

4.2.2.2 Communicating buildings. Sprinkler
protection shall be considered for, but need not be
provided in, the following communicating buildings
or structures:
a) a building or storey separated from the
sprinklered building by walls of not less than 6 h
fire resistance in which each opening is protected
by two (arranged in series) fire doors or fire
shutters each of not less than 2 h fire resistance;
b) canopies of non-combustible construction, not
extending beyond 2.3 m from the building wall.

From BS EN 12845:2004:

12.4.4 The distance from the edge of a canopy to the nearest sprinklers shall not exceed 1,5 m.

Also, from the LPC technical bulletin,  TB206.4.3 ( communicating buildings)passive fire protection of sprinklered buildings

sprinkler protection shall be considered for, but need not be provided in the following, communicating buildings or structures, which includes:-

"canopies" of non combustible construction, not exceeding beyond 2.3 m from the building wall, any such canopy not provided with sprinkler protection shall be fitted with cut off sprinklers under the canopy over each opening between it and the sprinklered building  any opening 2.5 m or less in width shall be provided with a cut off sprinkler, positioned centrally over the opening.

Thanks Folks - seems to reiterate what i was told .

Any advice as to where to purchase a copy of Technical Bulletin 206- I have access to the BS and BS EN standards but can't seem to find any direct link to (I assume LPC) the technical bulletin.

This canopy (actually 2.7m wide) is a simple glazed,  aluminium framed canopy (lean to off the building and open along its front (ie a just a roof with no walls).

I can't really see what benefit sprinklers have in this scenario - arguablly they are simply a target for vandalism. If the key criteria is the blazing wheelie bin then simply pushing the bin against an un canopied facade has the same (probably limited)  effect but not a sprinkler in sight.

Thanks again

Owen
