Why. If successful they'll post you where they choose. Also to improve your chances don't come acroos as a gung ho all fire and muscle firefighter. The service is now focussing on education and prevention not intervention.

to aid u in getting in, go on there web site 'www.rbfrs.co.uk' look at the stations and where they are, how many retained, wholtime and day crewing. find out what shifts systems are currently in use as these are some questions you sould be asked. also read up on fire service prevention ie fire service community safety. if u can go along to ur local fire station and ask questions and see if they will let u do some hose running as this is part of the selection process. ring the recruitment line on the website as they can post u a disc for recruitment which covers the whole process plus gives u examples of exam questions asked.

Is it not a requirement to have a basic knowledge of spelling & grammar for entry these days?

Spelling & Grammar - It is for the development stage - Key Skills at Level 2 in Literacy and Numeracy and Level 1 in IT fall from the NOS.

I recommend contacting the FBU Learning project, see the website for details, your Union Learning Representative will help with spelling and comprehension courses. No joke, no offence intended, but it will assist you as you will be expoected to be completing reports/forms and general admin, probably on PC and accuracy is required. Also you have to demonstrate that you actively seek your own personal development. Working to improve in those areas would give evidence for this, as well as gaining you valuable skills useable elsewhere in the standards. Most of your mistakes were typing erros but "in the no" may have been Jonny's point?

Actually, Wee B, no it isnt. That is Eros, not Erros. And why be so parochial. It could be in Greece---you know, the film with John Tavolta.

I think Wee B and I were engaged in something called humour - I, for one, am quite clear on the spelling of Eros

Nah, he starred in the film Death of a Union. Ruthie did the backing vocals. The sequel is probably being written even as we speak.
