After the discussion on who is competent, please vote if you would like to see something in the BS5839 setting out who is competent.

I think it would have to  include some of the better courses already, with maybe a refresher every three years.

I voted No because I don't think the BSI should determine precisely what level of competency is required whilst they are also in the business of running training courses.

It is bad enough that they currently do this whilst also determining the 'industry standard' recommendations.

If we are not careful, the only recognised 'competent' people will be those who have attended a four week BSI training course at a £1,000 a day (with annual refreshers!).

The BSI are already not shy at charging loads of money for slightly amended standards, don't give them any more encouragement to fleece us!

Wiz

never thought of it that way but i see your point. More money as usual to the ones who make an effort to do things the right way.

If it's included within BS5839, it wouldn't be every thing about fire engineer competency, it's rather competency in relation to the application of the standard…, but this is not every thing, the competent should have other skills, knowledge and expertise related to the industry too…etc

I voted no for the same reasons as Graeme and Wiz.

So I take it this competent person is going to be "recommended" to be used in the same way a third party UKAS accredited firm is recommended etc.....

Therefore it an be ignored in the same way ??

Nope for the reasons given by others.
