Diesel Oil Storage
« on: March 09, 2009, 10:52:34 AM »
Hi there, are there any statutory requirements for separating diesel oil tanks (GRP Bunded) from residential/hotel accomodation. I have two external diesel tanks approx 5000l each loacted within 2 metres of a residential/hotel rooms. The tanks are not fire separated. The rooms have a L1 detection system, therefore, residents should escape past the tanks before a fire impacted upon the tanks? any advice is welcome. Thanks

By virtue of the 2m gap between the tanks and teh hotel there is an element of fire seperation. The tanks will have or should have been designed to certain standards making accidental ignition of the contents pretty difficult in the first place, and indeed difficult for would be arsonists to break into the tanks. Diesel fuel aint that easily ignited. You could drop a match into a a barrel of diesel and the match would be extinguished. So long as the tank is well vented so long as the bunding is of the correct dept / height, so long as the area is kept clear, and something is in place to prevent vehicles striking the tanks I wouldnt do anything more than what is already in place.

This comes within the scope of building regulations.
