Where in the standards can i find a definitive guide as to where to use the running man legends

i.e  arrow down above doors etc.

it seems i am out of date again with e/lights with the direction of arrows thing.

any chance you could give me a very brief summary?

reason i am asking is i am getting confused by lighting manufacturers.

some sell the legend with no arrow to signify final exit and others say this is an outdated BS and the EN has an arrow pointing down.

also the arrow up for straight on etc etc.

some fittings only come with an option of arrow left,right and down and this is what i am told is now the standard.

Surely you mean it is one arrow sign which you can just rotate up, down, left, right?

As far as I am aware

No arrow Final Exit

Arrow down Change of level

Arrow up Straight on

Also why do luminaire manufacturers always use the European Standard when the majority of means of escape signs in the UK are BS

Tell that to Cooper who make emergency lights and thay will tell you that that is now outdated as they did myself.

I've just noticed in my Cooper book that for the Exit SE range they have both 'Euro legends' and BS5499 legnds. I don't know if this helps.

5th January 2009. It shows the Euro legend has Down, left and Right versions. And the BS5499 has Down, left, Right & Up versions.

This is why it all a bit confusing.

I have edition 3 which only has the Euro legends for the exit SE but if you look at the Zeta 2  with legend kit that you make up yourself,it shows the BS combos that can be made.

This was pointed out to Cooper who say that that should not be in the catalogue as it's been replaced by the Euro.

To broaden this discussion as you keep referring to the Euro sign, are you aware ISO 7010 is soon to become PR EN 7010.

Its entitled - Graphical symbols -- Safety colours and safety signs -- Safety signs used in workplaces and public areas

Its going from being an international standard, which is essentially a recommendation on best practice, to a European Norm requiring that the contents of the standard is written into a EU countries Law.

It will spell the death of a myriad of poor sign designs instead replacing them with a requirement for the same sign in every country for the same requirement.

It will mean a fire exit sign in England will be the same as a it would be in France, Spain, anywhere at all in the EU.

Euro fire exit sign (a man running towards a white brick wall) wave goodbye to him because it will be contrary to European standards to display it.

The BS standard is the same as the ISO standard so choose carefully.
