Manchester Fire Service Recruiting

Just wondering whether anyone else has filled out the pre-registration form to receive GMFRS's application form?

Sounds like they will be recruiting again.

Just a bit of an update but I failed the physical tests again grrrr.  The others that sat the tests last Tuesday heard back within 48 hrs so I guess I must have done something right.  Will see if I can get some sort of feedback on my performance.

MR: Thanks for all your help.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the support.  Well Im not going to give up being so close to passing.  I was 1 second over the time with the equipment carry and I still had problems with the ladder simulation lift.  I passed all the other tests with no problems and recruitment said I was very close to passing grrr.

Hi vikingmma,

Firstly my apologise for not replying sooner.  Congratulations on getting in after the medical delay and good luck with basic!!!  Yes I was at Cassidy close on the 20th.

I have been working on upper body strength and can do:
clean and jerk (20kg bar with a total of 5kg added)
standing shoulder press (20kg bar with a total of 10kg added) and I don't use my legs in this one
chest presses (17.5 kg d/b)
shoulder presses (10 kg d/b)
lat raises (15 kg on machine)
seated row (42 kg on machine)
dips (unaided)

I also work on my legs and can do:
Leg press (79 kg)
Calf raises (79 kg)
Leg extensions (45 kg on machine)
Leg curls (51 kg on machine)

For stamina I have been doing interval training.  I have recently been running on the treadmill at 8km/h then increasing the speed by 0.5 every minute.  I do a straight run on 8km/h with ankle weights and holding 2.5km d/b in each hand for 10-15 mins.

I am struggling this time to pick myself up but I know I won't take it lying down, i'll get there.  I would be very grateful for any advice you might be able to give cause im at a loss.

hmmm, seems like youve got it covered really, especially the upper body stuff. as long as you are training reguarly and im sure you are, then its more than likely 'on the day' something wasnt there.

did you actually 'struggle' with the ladder sim or was it your grip or something else they picked you up on?

all i would suggest for your program would be to try and up the weight on d'bell shoulder press considerably. throw in some bicep curls (the initial part of the sim requires a bicep movement if i remember correctly) and if poss, do some wide grip chins and some squats (with a bar) these are better overall strength moves.

if you have access to a gym or have decent weights at home, try a 'hang/clean to press' movement with the bar, this mimics the test more accurately than a shoulder press for example.

try and lift reasonably high weight for less reps (6 is good after a warm up) to improve strength, you are only required to lift the ladder once in the test so doing high reps at lower weight will not bring you results.

hope this helps and good luck!

Thanks for the advice.

I am doing bicep curls and a few other exercises on top of the ones listed below.  Generally speaking I am training 3-5 days a week with a properly worked out diet as well I should add.  The gym I go to have instructors who sort out a programme and I see my instructor every 12 weeks or so to change my programme accordingly.  At the boxing gym I go to I also do circuits which is a change from my normal routine.  At the moment I am doing 3-4 sets of 6 reps.

On the day (as with every other time I have done the tests) with the full weight added I can get the bar up to chest height and change my grip ok but then the bar feels like its bolted into the floor (its the only way i can describe it) and then I can't move it an inch.

Thank you once again for your advice I will take your suggestions to my instructor who I hope to see very soon.
