Vandal proof fire exit signage

I was recently asked by a manager in a child hostel/home environment on the availability of fire exit signage that the little darlings are not able to rip off or are easy and cheap to replace. The kids are big strapping teenagers who appear to run riot when not supervised. Does anyone have any experience in this area? A suggestion was to make/buy a stencil to apply white painted pictograms onto a green background directly onto a wall where required. I am sure the purists out there would be horrified but wondered what the consensus was.

Why does everyone knock themselves out trying to resolve a problem that shouldn't exist?

Nothing is vandal-proof.

Would they not just deface the proposed 'directly painted on' signs?

My suggestion is to call the Police to investigate the vandalism. Hopefully they will arrest the miscreants, and then the courts will punish them enough to make them stop. (obviously, pigs might also fly)

Following on from Wiz - why not use steel signs wired to the mains electricity supply. That'll sort the little beggers.

I dont think the signs and sigs regs have prescriptive requirements so I dont see why a painted version wouldnt be acceptable (even if the green isn't quite the RAL it shoudl be).

Wouldn't self adhesive signs be good enough or are they very nasty urchins?

Yes. A darned good dose of community service will sort the little beggars out. If that fails we can always resort to my favourite method of behaviour correction - the flame thrower.

Hey, be careful guys as Timmer may be referring to young adults with learning difficulties or have challeging behaviour. Their behaviour might be for some underlying reason beyond our understanding...hence them receiving care

I have seen and accepted painted stencil signs before.

I reckon Davo means those ploycarbonate curved ones that have a policeman standing behind it.

Seriously it appears to me to be as much a management issue as anything. Who needs to use the exit signs? Probably not staff or the youngsters. You could cover evacuation routes and have regular drills using every different route, and make a point of showing new staff and resisdents all routes on induction.

You wont have all and sundry walking round so the only people who may need the signs are visitors and contractors- and again an induction could cover that. The evacuation in an emergency will no doubt be very hands on by the staff so anyone who is not leaving could be dealt with by sweepers. Fianlly you could paint all doors on exit routes green and all others red. or use wayfinder lights. and painting the signs would be fine in the circumstances.

Many thanks to all that have posted so far, for info as Paul correctly guessed the kids involved are all either with learning difficulties or in a half-way situation from social services care environments, otherwise the electrified signs sound perfect!!

I also take the point about not having any signage at all and relying on managerial procedures.......or I will get them to get their stencil kit out.

I have never heard of this Vandal Signage, I don't think this could in any way affect the health, or we need to consult any health professional regarding this. This is another issue and have no relation or little relation with the health.
