Unit in shopping mall
« on: November 25, 2009, 12:10:42 PM »
How long can the travel distance be within a unit before an alternative exit is required and in which guide would I find this information?

BS9999 - The means of escape in units should be designed in accordance with
the recommendations contained in Section 5. Small units and kiosks
with a single exit do not need to be provided with alternative means
of escape unless they exceed 25 m2 in total area and 5 m in depth
(i.e. the distance from the mall frontage to the back of the unit,
including any non-retail space).
We're not Brazil we're Northern Ireland.

If the unit is existing and was designed to 5588 part 10 then that should relect what you want.  Alternatively, the centre may have been subject to an engineered solution and therefore the design strategy document may have the information you require.

But remember you must use BS9999 as the whole document and not cherry pick ;D

SidM, to save you looking through BS9999 and BS5588-10, they both say the same.
