Part 6 smoke detectors
« on: March 17, 2010, 06:16:50 PM »
Does anyone know of a tamper proof mains, battery back up, smoke detector. I have a client with a number of bed sits where he has some problems with residents removing the detectors from their bases due to their "hobbies"!!. I was always under the impression that one of the reasons mains systems were fitted was to prevent the problem of removal by residents.

Can you find out what the "hobbies" are jake and where and how the detector head is used?
Some on this forum, especially those in the very recent posts in the Banter Thread, are looking for something new.

Hi Jakespop

Im sure one of the fire alarm engineers here on the forums will be able to advise you on some of the products available to combat the problem you describe.

But in the meantime one method I have seen to prevent tampering are security cages mounted over the  detector heads.

The cages are fixed in place by security screws.

One landlord who installed them reported that they did the trick.

You can get smoke alarms with sealed in batteries where they are soldered onto the pcb.
With mains products you should stipulate alarms with Rechargeable batteries.

On these Kidde's mains alarms  www.smoke-alarms.co.uk  once installed on their bases, they are locked on by default
ie they need a screwdriver inserted at appropriate place to release the lock.
