I am presently writing a paper on Fire Safety Signs & Notices and have developed a small survey to assess the UK populous understanding of such.

Could I please ask you to oblige me in this venture by completing the survey at

http://www.dfrmowales.org/fds/index.php?sid=31295&lang=en

I would also appreciate if you could pass this request onto your colleagues, friends & family and ask them to do the same, so that I capture data from different persons all over the UK.

There are only 17 questions, it takes a maximum of 5 minutes and is strictly anonymous without the need to login.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Best Regards

I'd love to have seen all the answers - even just from the industry professionals on here as I know there would be differences in opinion.

From my experience, some of the helpful pictograms introduced since '96 are not that helpful unless you are trained or there is supplementary text (and you speak & read English).

Although the general public's answers for the Fire-fighter's helmet symbol on the fire point sign will be hillarious at least it's better than the previous ISO symbol of a white semi circle on a red background!

Accurate observation, I won't say what the results are so far but from nearly 400 people both General Public and 'others' - 50% got it right and the other 50% took a wild guess regardless of the size of the helmet or the length of time waiting for the LFRS !!!!

By the way have you ever seen a fire training package that focussed properly on signs !

If you can canvas some more victims, sorry I mean participants it would be appreciated.

Depends what you mean by "right" some of the questions are subjective.

I used to include fire safety and means of escape signage training within the fire training package I provided when an extinguisher engineer. For me this was more important than fire training as looking and understanding signs is a lot preferable than standing and trying to read a load of small printed irrelevant text.
Pictoral signs are more effective for a quick decision. The only downside is of course is have they got the right sign in the right place?!? Companies don't seem to carry out checks on the signs which is very iresponsible for all parties involved be they service provider or end user.

Now then, I'm blind and really do appreciate those wonderful Braille signs halfway up the wall telling me which way to go in a fire, I just need to find it to confirm which is the safe route before that smoke kills me...... Or is that just a scam? Surely not.

I do find them quite amusing.

How on earth do they know where the sign is in the first place? ::)

FSO

In Leeds Bus Station there's a plinth with an engraved braille plaque near stand 18 giving stand numbers for the buses ::)

I discussed these with a representative of a disabled persons user group.  The answer surprised me.  She said that it was patently ridiculous to expect the blind to grope around the walls looking for braille-enhanced signs when the fire alarm is sounding - if that is necessary then something has gone wrong with the PEEP, but that if they are provided in workplaces it helps blind workers familiarise themselves with the exit routes on their own - they can walk the routes in their own time & without assistance.

13 Days Later......

Ah some company at last.

"Er..hello, Could you help me leave this room in a safe manner please? I've been a bit stuck looking for a sign."

"Oh, sorry Fabio, didn't realise you were poorly sighted too"

"Who's this? Hello ref Are you blind too?"   >:(

"We better look for a sign together then. Eh?"  :'(
