Scotland - Building Standards Staircase Capacity
« on: July 11, 2010, 11:32:40 AM »
As you will all be aware within England and Wales ADB provides both a formula and table to enable designers and fire consultants to calculate individual staircase capacity based on staircase width and number of floors served. I have been asked to provide the occupancy capacity of an office building in Scotland and although I have been able to interpret the other differences within the Scottish standards (exit widths etc), I am struggling to find guidance on staircase capacity.

I have staircase widths and number of floors served.

A point in the right direction by any readers familiar with the Scottish Standards would be appreciated.

Only BS 9999 now, other than BS 5588 Part 1.  Although, some FRS are still accepting design to the rest of the BS 5588 series.

Stuart,

I'm not an expert on Scottish Building Regs but I do occasionally nip up to that most beautiful of countries to see what they're doing to their buildings.

What I do know is that the staircase calculations don't work quite the same way as they do in other parts of the UK.  Simply follow the guidance in 2.9.10 of the Technical Handbook and you should be ok.  Try not to get confused by 2.9.11.

Stuart

look at 2.9.31 of the new Technical Handbook Part 2 Fire Safety (the one that comes into force later this year). The guidance you need is in there.
