I found this amusing.... many people have opinions and I do not feel there is legally a right or wrong answer.  There are many arguments for them and many against.  However my opinion, like CT's, is that fire extinguishers are not necessary in blocks of flats.  However i'm confident tradebodies and everyone who sell extinguishers would disagree......... ha ha. A lot of them are members of the FIA.

I don't think that there are many arguments for them. Once you are out in the common area then you are safe and the rest of the building is safer if the door then remains closed while you phone the FRS to attend. If you want to protect your property then go buy your own extinguisher and keep it in the flat.

Extinguishers for general cover should be next to an exit & the risk for special cover- not the other side of it!

I've upset a few maintenance contractors on some sites - when they turned up to service 125 & 30 respectively on two in particular they found about 20 & 6, the rest having been withdrawn!

On one site the fire service queried, I showed them the FRA and the rationale and they were perfectly happy with it.

If the householders really wanted fire cover rather than making a nice media storm then they could buy a decent fire blanket and extinguisher for not much more than a tenner apiece!
