Fire Alarm Servicing
« on: June 19, 2014, 05:58:43 PM »
Has anyone ever come across a Fire Alarm Service company which is very unwilling to specify BS5839 Pt1 on its service contract? What would the panel draw from this?

No, I've come across some that use references to superseded editions & even one using pt.6 certificates for servicing and commissioning commercial systems  :o but never a refusal to add it in.

My response in return would be to refuse to use their services...

Although to be fair are they being asked to service outside the requirements of the BS (e.g. one service a year or even one service every two years, which I have seen) I could understand a refusal to certify maintenance as being to BS5839

They are being asked to service a system to S5839 Pt1 but having looked at their contract it states it will be make 4 visits annually. Perhaps that is why?
Also closed protocol system.

4 visits a year is the default in BS5839, although it can be agreed by relevant parties to be done in 2 so I don't know why this would be an issue.

A closed system means they have got you by the short and curlies and if they want a get out by not contracting to comply to BS5839 then short of replacing the panel and devices you are stuck with them other than for the most basic stuff!

5839 states "2 or more visits", where does the 4 visits come from?
We do 2 visits unless specified otherwise by the client, e.g. Nursing homes need 4 visits to satisfy care standards. Am I missing something here?

oops, shades of 2002 edition there! A lot of places default to the long standing 4 visits, although 2 will do as you say!

Of course an increasing number of places are now only servicing once a year and no one seems bothered!
