Sorry for my ignorance, but can anyone tell me do standard domestic stairs have 30 minute fire resistance

simple answer is no. even if underdrawn with plasterboard it may or may not achieve anything like 30 mins. would always say when in doubt say itll give ya nowt.

Davidst, the good book guides give you the requirement - if fr compatmentation etc. is needed. There are many ways ways to achieve this - so many building construction methods which would meet the requirements, some cheaper, some more costly. You would [need] to get reputable builder(s) to give you estimates for the various ways. It would be unfair to ask someone on this forum 'what to use - which way to do it'.

You could always approach one of the test houses (Exova Warringtonfire, BM-TRADA etc).  They're usually pretty good about offering some guidance.

It's often not the stairs we're worried about, it's the staircase enclosure.  Which are you referring to?
