You should know Buzz. It was built over there! But the lifeboat provision complied with the legislation, so that must have been ok???
It was ok when it left Belfast!!
It must go down (no pun intended!) as the ultimate example of regulations being guidlines and each job or task should be risk assessed on it's own merit.

There will only ever be 1 or 2 people working upstairs in the building (we really are a 2 man band; a mom & pop firm). When I say we spent thousands on the place it was money for essentials such as disability access/security/locks/new fire doors/new door frames/push bars and so on, that also prevent arson (see I did my homework!). Gosh, I wish we could afford marble walls and fixtures!!!  Its not that we are scrimping here; the building is old, we had tons of work to do and I now am certain that the electrician we spoke to was just trying to upsell us. He probably works for clients like large supermarket chains who we simply cannot be compared with (maybe one day, who knows!).

Thanks again everyone. All advice noted and taken on board.

Colin,
Fair enough, but a FRA by a consultant usually makes the FSO's job a lot easier....I guess I should have declared an interest!!
Mopsy,
Sounds like a fair old project you undertook! Did it go through Builing Regulations? If so the Building Control Officer and the Fire Safety Officer should have given some input about fire alarms as part of that process.
