There is no national standard as to what a Trainer is. The only roles that have been defined by the NJC are the main ones i.e.
Firefighter, Firefighter (Control), CM, CM (Control), WM, WM (Control), SM, SM (Control), GM, GM (Control) and AM.

It is up to each individual service to decide what role they wish to put a Trainer into. For example Durham Fire & Rescue have made Trainers WM 'A'.

Each service is supposed to use the job weighting tools to decide where their Trainers fit in.

Look at the role maps for CM and WM and xmap against what YOU do as a Trainer. If what you do is more aligned to a WM than a CM you should be placed in a WM role, or vice versa.

Sorry but it probably wasn't the answer you were after.

Good luck I would recommend that you do your own job weighting as well.

Just use the role maps for each role you could fall into. the IPDS web site has loads of information to help you. Click on EFS Database, click on reports, put in WM then look through the modules and check what is required of a WM. Do the same for CM.

Hopefully for you it will come out in the favour of the higher one. My bet is the best you will get is WM 'A'.

rips - you have a pretty good handle on it! not forgetting fireftrm of course - however job weighting relates to a or b and not role placing - for the deep thinkers the job weighting elements are built into the units and elements of the rolemaps.

what is really required to implement the move from rank to role is a functional task/job analysis of each and every job - of course some brigades will say this isnt possible - others will recognise the benefits to the organisation such an exercise will bring - the only reason job descriptions were agreed at njc level as being the starting point was that 'their' side said that some brigades may not have the resources in place to carry out such an exercise - yet how would they then manage to implement work shift etc? it is what an employee does NOT how much of it that they do that places an employee into a role - from that point, the job size (weight) needs to be assessed to determine a or b

i would suggest that everyone undertakes a functional job/task analysis - which is NOT job weighting - of their own particular job - ths would then allow and evidence an appeal if you felt it appropriate

ps. next r2r fbu seminar likely to be in south west region - speak to your fbu reps!
