Retro fit for fire doors

I have to replace two doors at our local CAB offices with half hour fire doors. One is an ordinary single internal door and the other is a pair of double interior doors. Can fire doors be fitted into the exisiting ordinary door frames or do fire doors have to be fitted with their own frames?

The doors are tested as a set, therefore the frame is part of the system.

You should be able to find out what frames are compatible with the doors from the manufacturer/retailer and if the existing ones are the same then there is no need to change them.

Sometimes the frame will need to have intumescent seals fitted but these are usually in the door.

Also the fitting of the frame is key part.  Sadly I have seen replacement sets fitted whereby they would be easily by-passed by smoke and flame.

It's not just the fit of the frame that's key.   I've seen some appallingly fitted doors.   You must ensure that the gaps are even between leaf and leaf, and leaf and frame and are no bigger than quoted in the test evidence.   If you don't see the test evidence......... on you own head be it!

how can I find a carpenter who I can trust to fit a fire door to appropriate specifications?  

is there any sort of accreditation or "fire safety club" memebership I can look for ?

I'm on the south coast near Brighton if anyone knows a decent chippy ...

BMTRADA (part of the Timber Research and Development Association) and 'FIRAS' both have training & accreditation schemes for fire door installers.  Google 'em for the contact details...

First things first, does your fire risk assessment require these doors to be fire doors?  (Or the Fire Certificate currently in existence perhaps, I keep forgetting that bit)
