Air Sampling “VESDA” system

Looks good Simon,

Although the issue, as you would expect is cost.  They have already spent thousands on the VESDA system and will no doubt stick with this, however if the downtime they may experience is costing loss of production etc, they may be forced to look at alternatives.

Many thanks I will keep this up my sleeve.

Have you thought about video detection.  This could be your best option, have a look at www.dtec-fire.com.

At present it's not part of 5839 - it's existence is ackowledged but thats it!

Buzzard905

I'm happy to be proved wrong but I think it will come under the engineered solution part.

Hmm,automatic fire detectors are now recognised as part of an engineered solution but video smoke detection isn't classed as automatic fire detection (unless there has been an ammendment to what i have and if there is I apologise).2002 recognises new technologies such as video technology,CO detectors and multi sensors but there are no relevant standards.Again,if there has been an up date I'll have to have a word with our trainers for making me look a twit!

Cheers Buzzard

I'll be interested to hear what they say.  I'll have a word with DTec and get their call on it.

I am currently working on a train depot and have had a consultant specify a VESDA system in the main depot. To avoid high level maintenance issues, the main depot will be used for servicing diesel trains, this is not a clean environment!?

The system being used is from Siemens & they feel that it is perfectly suitable for this application. this environment is much worse than any mentioned here. any comment would be welcome

An air sampling system would be ok provided it is set up correctly and maintained as per installers/manufacturers recommendations. If you're below the midlands it'll most likely be a Wagner system as opposed to the more common Vesda Laser+ etc.

I am currently involved in reliability calculations for typical VESDA detection loop. Since this type of detection is relatively new and no many sources exist to address this issue.

Can anyone provide figures for failure rates (e.g. total, covert or overt type of failures), common mode failure factor, Safe failure fraction etc for a "VESDA" type detector? I would also appreciate, if you could mention the references used.

Thanks
Dinos
